A drivetrainnot a parts list

Anyone can sell you a motor. The hard part is knowing which motor, behind which reduction, under which controller, charged how, for a machine that has to climb a grade at load and still finish the shift.

Get that sizing wrong and the symptoms show up late. The motor runs hot, the controller derates on the third lap, the vehicle is still charging when the next shift starts. So the drivetrain is specified as one system against your targets, then the parts are drawn from stocked, established lines that will still be supportable years from now.

Motor controllers

AC induction and PMAC controllers for traction, pump, lift and hybrid duty, programmable to the vehicle rather than fixed at the factory.

Motors

Traction, pump, gear and wheel drive motors, specified against the load and duty cycle the vehicle actually sees.

Gearboxes and transaxles

Wheel drives, transaxles and gearboxes matched to the motor so the ratio and the torque curve agree.

Chargers

Onboard and standalone units from 350 watts to 36 kilowatts, including IP66 rated models for wash down and outdoor duty.

Encoders and sensors

Incremental and absolute encoders, current shunts and magnetic switches for closed loop control and instrumentation.

Contactors and controls

DC contactors, high voltage switching, displays, throttles, gauges, alarms and beacons.

Four questions decide most of the system. Answering them properly at the start is cheaper than discovering them on a prototype.

Duty cycle first

Grade, payload, speed, run time and rest time. A motor sized off peak torque alone will either cook itself or cost twice what it needed to.

Motor and gearbox together

The ratio and the torque curve get chosen as one decision, because a correct motor behind the wrong reduction is still the wrong drivetrain.

Controller and software

Sizing the controller to continuous current rather than peak, then writing the control logic and parameter set the vehicle needs.

Energy and charging

Pack voltage, opportunity charging and shift patterns worked out together, so the vehicle is charged when the next shift needs it.

Control software

Vehicle control logic written and the parameter set tuned to the platform, including electro hydraulic control where the machine needs it.

Prototype and validation

A running system built and measured against the targets, with the sizing revised before anyone commits to production volume.

Production and support

Release to production with stocked components behind it, and engineering support that does not end at the purchase order.
